A Day in the Life: Will – From Spores to Storms

This month, our "Day in the Life" series shines a spotlight on one of the most versatile members of the SeaGrown crew: Will.

Will has been a familiar face around the company for a long time, lending a hand everywhere from the farmers' market stalls to the packing room. But recently, he has stepped up to a new challenge. He is now a full-time Crew Member, training for offshore operations on Bright Blue.

It is a role that demands resilience, adaptability, and a good pair of sea legs. As the rest of the team agrees, he has taken to the North Sea naturally. We asked Will to walk us through his unique journey, bridging the gap between the microscopic science in the hatchery and the heavy engineering offshore.

"My alarm goes off early. If it’s a sea day, there is no hitting the snooze button.

My new full-time role is as a Crew Member, so I'm spending a lot of my time on Bright Blue, training for our offshore operations. The rhythm of the day is set by the weather and the tide. It starts on the quayside, checking our gear and the day's plan with the rest of the crew.

Heading out to the cultivation site in the North Sea is always the highlight. It’s a physical job, deploying and maintaining the Kelpedo™ units requires focus and teamwork. I'm learning a huge amount from the senior crew, from boat handling to the specifics of rigging. The North Sea can be demanding, but being out there, working with the elements, is incredibly rewarding.

But the best part of my job is the contrast.

Because I've been with SeaGrown for a while, my week can look completely different from one day to the next. When I'm not battling the waves offshore, I'm often found in the quiet of the hatchery, helping our Scientific Officers.

There, the pace changes completely. I’ll be assisting with the sori harvest by collecting the microscopic 'seeds' for the next generation of kelp. It’s delicate, precise work.

I’ve even jumped in to help the 'SeaGrown at Home' team pack seasonings for a big order. I love that I get to see the full lifecycle. I see the process start as a tiny spore under a microscope in the hatchery, and I see it end as a fully grown 'Sea Tree' out in the ocean.
It’s a privilege to be part of a team that cares about every step of that journey."
