Seed Nursery and Marine Research Team

At SeaGrown we also run our own bespoke seaweed nursery to provide seeds for the farm - allowing us to focus on producing local, native seaweed species.

We also have a team of marine scientists who carry out environmental and marine analyses to optimise our seaweed growth and quantify the benefits of our systems including marine biodiversity and carbon uptake.

Marine Hub

Our marine team have a diverse range of backgrounds from fishing, windfarm, North Sea offshore operations and the Navy – as well as apprentices learning their trade.

Together the team deploy, maintain and recover our seaweed, as well as developing our system. They operate our fleet of three vessels:

  • BRIGHT BLUE

A repurposed oil spill response vessel, Bright Blue a 20m aluminium catamaran, equipped with bespoke seaweed farming equipment designed by SeaGrown. Bright Blue functions as the main operations vessel for SeaGrown's seaweed farm.

    Her duties include:

    • Deployment of seaweed seedlings and growth structures at our offshore site.
    • Harvesting seaweed
      Biodiversity sampling and monitoring.
    • Testing the latest innovations from the SeaGrown Team
  • RAZORBILL

A faster inspection boat, ideal for navigating around the equipment in the water at SeaGrown's offshore site. Razorbill serves as a support vessel for scientific monitoring.
    She is used for:

    • Equipment inspections at the offshore site
    • Monitoring of seaweed growth.
    • Environmental measurements such as water temperature throughout the year
  • SOUTHERN STAR

A 37 metre ship built in Newcastle, Australia in 1974, now calling Scarborough Harbour her home.
Southern Star is SeaGrown’s marine and science hub and home to the SeaGrown Centre
    It is used for:

    • Our base for marine and science operations
    • SeaGrown's headquarters
    • Community outreach and education.
    • Events and exhibitions.
    • SeaGrown’s Seaweed Shop and cafe.
